The statistics for people who experience violence in their homes in the U.S. are staggering. Puertas Abiertas, a non-profit organization serving the vulnerable population of women and their children in Kent County, is dedicated to the safety of victims of domestic abuse, human trafficking, sexual assault, stalking, and workplace abuse. Having a program that is culturally sensitive to these victims is critical in their healing.

Claudia Annoni, the new Executive Director of Puertas Abiertas, spoke to us about her mission to change the lives of families in need of support. Puertas Abiertas – which translates to “Open Doors” has programs for adults and youth. Adults can get help with wellness classes; mental health therapy, safety plans and court advocacy. The Youth programs offer positive after school activities for school aged children; mental support for Latinx students, and provide work force skills to students for that next step after high school.
