Creating Community Through Food

Jerry Adams spoke recently at WCC about FarmLink

Local farmers sell their produce to local consumers. That is the concept of FarmLink and Jerry Adams is the mastermind behind it. He developed a database of farmers and producers from around West Michigan, set up a website, invited consumers to visit, and just like that connections are made!

Each week from Thursday - Sunday buyers can log on to the website, fill their baskets with choices from thousands of items, choose pick-up or delivery, and the items will be ready on Tuesday.

Producers set their own prices and multiple sales are consolidated into one transaction. They are typically small scale family farms who need only to make one delivery to the FarmLink warehouse yet are selling to multiple personal and commercial buyers. Buyers get access to multiple growers and makers and purchases are consolidated into a single transaction.

A recent open house at FarmLink, 1111 Godfrey, NW, brought the farmers and makers together with the consumers. It was a fabulous event where one could meet the people behind the meat, produce, honey, maple syrup, dulse (yes, seaweed!), coffee, and so much more and sample the goods. It is wonderful to see how passionate the farmers and other producers are about what they produce. Buying local is a great way to spend your food dollars.
